an off-road bicycle, not a ‘mountain bike’

(in the same way a Trials motorbike is not a Motocross motorbike)

You’ve clicked onto this website, looked at the picture, and you’re thinking “What a heap of shite…” or “…disgusting!” or “…an idiot machine…”, you need read no further.

However, you may be thinking “that’s a bit odd…” or “I wonder why anyone should design a bike like that?”, read on; you’ll find this website challenges just about every aspect of conventional bicycle design wisdom.

Then there are those who will say to themselves something like “Ah yes, I see what this is about”. These rare people can see through the hype that infests our market-led economy, into the heart of a practical, utilitarian design, which doesn’t follow fashion.

The Cleland Aventura can do some things more easily or efficiently than a mountain bike because it follows function before form. By the same token, a mountain bike can do some things an Aventura can’t; both do similar things, but in slightly different ways.

A principal element of the design that perturbs most ‘cyclists’ is the very upright riding posture. This is not a mistake, long-term spinal health is the reason. The design philosophy also explains just a few of the basic principles and ideas behind it.

The Cleland Aventura has been in development since the 1960s and has taken a different evolutionary route to the mountain bike.
